VNA October "Shoo the Flu" Vaccination Clinics
THURSDAY 10/3 - 10/30
VARIOUS LOCATIONS
Flu season is quickly approaching, and the Visiting Nurse Association’s (VNA) 27th annual “Shoo the Flu” vaccination program is underway. Those who get their flu shot at any of the Hidden Treasures clinics will receive a coupon to the hospice thrift store for 50% off any one item. To receive a flu shot from the VNA, individuals should bring their primary insurance card. Those without health insurance, or who are unable to afford the cost of a flu shot, can call VNA Community Wellness Manager, Paula Thibideau, LPN, at 772-978-5524 for more options.

The VNA will offer three types of flu vaccinations: a preservative-free high-dose vaccine, a preservative-free quadrivalent vaccine and a regular quadrivalent vaccine. The high-dose vaccine contains four times the number of antigens and is only for those individuals who are 65 years or older. The quadrivalent vaccine is for individuals 10 years or older and offers broader coverage than the regular flu shot. All VNA flu vaccines are manufactured in the United States, and money raised from the VNA’s “Shoo the Flu” program supports the agency, allowing the non-profit to provide care to anyone in the community who needs quality home health and hospice services, including those who do not have adequate healthcare coverage for much needed care.

The VNA’s priority is to keep the community healthy, and the organization encourages all area residents to get their flu shot early in the season. Money raised by the “Shoo the Flu” program stays in the community and helps fund VNA charitable health care initiatives. For the most up to date schedule, visit www.vnatc.com/flu.

The Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession's rigors to the public. Wearing "full bunker gear" and the Scott 5.5 Air-Pak breathing apparatus, pairs of competitors race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. "victim" as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock. Many consider this to be the "toughest two minutes in sports."

Also featured on the program is a new exciting work by our very own Aaron Collins, Dracula Reimagined, based on his award-winning 1999 composition, The Dracula Suite. And this just in: there’s dreadful news from the concert hall—the composer is dead! Calling all sneaky sleuths and would-be detectives! Who offed the composer? Was it the shifty string section, or maybe the treacherous trumpets? Every instrument in the orchestra is suspect! With music by Nathaniel Stookey and text by Lemony Snicket, no one leaves the Concert Hall until this mystery is solved! With entertaining Eric Pinder narrating, The Composer Is Dead is a hilarious whodunit for the whole family. Loving Kindness Meditation
SUNDAY 8/18 • 9:15 AM - 10 AM
TERRY MINDFULNESS & LONG WELLNESS CENTER
3150 Cardinal Drive • Vero Beach

Metta Meditation-The practice is the softening of the mind and heart, an opening to deeper and deeper levels of the feeling of kindness, of pure love. “Loving-kindness, or metta, is unconditional, it does not depend on whether one “deserves” it or not; it is not restricted to friends and family; it extends out from personal categories to include all living beings.

A few studies suggest that loving-kindness meditation may impact health and well-being. One study done at Stanford University suggests that a short 7 minute practice of loving-kindness meditation can increase social connectedness. Loving-kindness meditation has also been shown to reduce pain and anger in people with chronic lower back pain.

Researcher Barbara Fredrickson at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that loving-kindness meditation can help boost positive emotions and well-being in life, fostering the personal resources that come from experiencing positive emotion.

What are you waiting for…This event happens every Sunday.
