Speaking of food – we can’t forget to mention the “mango madness”.  Businesses are encouraged to incorporate mango into their treats and drinks. It’s a fun way for businesses to get creative with their offerings. There will be savory mango salsas, sweet mango beverages and desserts, and beautiful mango creations for everyone to enjoy.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER & STAR PARTY

Perseid Meteor Shower & Star Party at the Environmental Learning Center on Saturday, August 11th 7:30pm to 10:00pm. The ELC is a great place to see it because our lagoon island gets beautifully dark at night making it a favorite for stargazers! 

The Perseid Meteor Shower occurs each year when the earth traverses through the orbit of Comet Swift-Tuttle (the largest solar system object to pass near Earth, which occurs every 133 years). The Perseid meteor shower that we’ve grown accustom to seeing around the same time each year is the dust and debris from Swift-Turttle’s orbit, which burn up as they enter our atmosphere. The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the most popular meteor showers that occurs each year, and this year it’s predicted to be even better with the new moon falling on the night of the shower’s peak. The ELC is already a very dark campus at nighttime, but with the new moon, this should create one of the most dark (and we mean DARK!) and ideal viewing opportunities for any meteor shower. Come and enjoy a fascinating look into the cosmos as we kick off the night at 7:30pm with a presentation jam-packed with interstellar information that’s sure spark curiosity and wonder for all ages! At8:00pm, the Brevard Astronomical Society will be sharing their expertise along with their high powered telescopes for viewing of plants and starts. We’ll also have a Kids Stary Storytime & Space Craft and Touch Tank Encounters. A night sky guide will be given out so that you’ll have information on the stars and planets you’ll see.  Be sure to bring a comfy blanket or a lawn chair or lounge chair & binoculars if you have them to view this spectacular shooting-star celebration here at the ELC’s extra-dark campus. We’ll also have binoculars for rent and give out glow items to add to the evening fun! The event is dependent upon our fickle Florida weather so check our website at discoverELC.org to make sure it’s a “go” that night – we’re keeping our fingers crossed for clear skies! 

Admission is $5 for children ages 2 to 11 and $10 for Adults and children 12 and older. Free admission for children under 2 and with proof of financial need. ELC members get a discount. This year, the parade will again begin at the Sebastian Community Center and the Sebastian Masonic Lodge at 1805 Jackson Street proceeding East on Davis Street and South of Indian River Drive to Riverview Park. The parade begins at 8:30 a.m. Prior to the parade, is the Freedom Run 5K, a Sunrise 5K race that helps support the LifeSkills Training program taught in all county middle schools and six elementary schools. Following the parade, there will be festivities in the park. Live entertainment, food, craft booths, vendors, etc. Fireworks at dusk. This is a fun-filled family event!

The Samaritan Center is a comprehensive, multi-level, homeless program for families in Indian River County. To date the Samaritan Center has provided shelter for over 1,700 residents including over 900 children. The Samaritan Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and has an annual operating budget of over $840,000. Private donations and grants and fundraising efforts account for more than 75% of the funding of Samaritan Center.

Starting Monday, June 4, WPTV Chief Meteorologist Steve Weagle will be making his annual Ride for the Red Cross. This year ’s ride is in recognition of the years and dollars raised by WPTV and Steve’s Ride for the Red Cross. We are setting a goal of $150,000 to purchase a needed Next Generation Emergency Response Vehicle! This year, Steve will make his annual Ride on June 4-8, 2018 from Sebastian to Boca Raton to mark the beginning of hurricane season and raise awareness of the Red Cross. The goal is to educate residents on hurricane preparedness and raise critical funds for the region. All proceeds from the Ride will benefit the American Red Cross Palm Beach & Martin County Chapter and Florida’s Coast to Heartland Chapter. Steve will be broadcasting live on WPTV from his stops twice a day, and residents are encouraged to come out and cheer him on. Local partners and sponsors can join us in making this a successful event.

Join fellow members and tour the beautiful 150-acre chimpanzee sanctuary, home to nearly 250 rescued chimpanzees. Save the Chimps is closed to the public but hosts three Member Day events per year. Members from across the country have an opportunity to register for a guided tour of the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary, and to catch a glimpse of nearly 250 chimpanzee residents. The tour covers 1.25 miles of the expansive 150-acre sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida. Members will observe the chimpanzees as they roam the islands covered in grass, palm trees, hills, and climbing structures. The chimps have the freedom to run, play, visit with friends, find a quiet corner to relax, bask in the sun, or curl up in the shade. Seeing these sights is a one-of-a-kind experience!

Members are welcome to attend each Member Day, however, registration and payment are required for each.  Member day is a rain or shine event. Registrations are non-refundable.

9TH ANNUAL MOTOR CAR EXHIBITION FEATURING BRITISH CARS

Forty classic and current British cars will be on display throughout the lush tropical landscape of McKee, ranging from a 1931 Bentley 8 Liter to the latest 710 horsepower 2018 McLaren. Collectors from across the state will be showcasing their cars, including a rarely-seen 1970 Marcos Mantis, 1972 Reliant and 1937 BSA Scout.  In addition, there will be a historic 1953 C Type Jaguar, 1954 D Type Jaguar, and a 1958 Tojeiro Jaguar, which is #3 out of four in the world. Custom car enthusiasts will enjoy a recently completed 1950 Jaguar Mark V Saloon powered by a 325 horsepower V8 engine. This year’s car show is being held in conjunction with McKee’s It’s A Jungle Out There! Exhibition featuring 24 hand-crafted metal African sculptures made especially for McKee by the Ark Collective of Kenya.  Ranging in size from 3’ to 16’, this amazing exhibit features life-size gorillas, giraffes, elephants, a hippopotamus, a rhinoceros, and many more! April Closed Island Sales

April was a busy month for island sales.  64 Properties closed on the barrier island.  They had an average sales price of $784,935.  The highest was $5,000,000 for an oceanfront home in Bermuda Bay and the least expensive was a one bedroom condo in Del Mar for $115,000.
